Home Neverwinter Nights Neverwinter Nights 2

Neverwinter Nights 2 was a labor of love for me -- I'm passionate about Dungeons & Dragons, but it took a lot of work to make it through the game. After waiting for the developers at Obsidian to fix the bugs, I slogged through it, wishing that they had deloused its mediocre story as well: It lacked the epic hook of many D&D games, and it was tedious at times (remember the "medieval human resources manager" nonsense of Crossroads Keep?). Its first expansion, Mask of the Betrayer, entranced me from the start: An epic storyline of primeval forces, it was the best D&D game since Baldur's Gate 2.

One of the most difficult challenges facing any RPG designer, especially one working on a Dungeons & Dragons game, is the problem of death. In the paper-and-pencil Dungeons & Dragons, this usually required a trip to town, a convenient cleric or a hideously expensive resurrection scroll. D&D computer game players, on the other hand, found even a death penalty that mild to be boring, which led to the ever-ready out called "saving and restoring." In the end, most D&D games since the original Baldur's Gate just had players get "knocked out," only to get up when the combat was over. However, the latest expansion pack for Neverwinter Nights 2 won't be doing that, instituting a death system a bit closer to the original paper-and-pencil game. We recently went hands-on with the game to check out this and some of the other new features of Storm of Zehir.

The Neverwinter Nights games have brought us many hours of fun over the years, from the depth of the single-player campaigns and expansions to the tabletop tone of the multiplayer. But as fun as those aspects of have been, it's always been an either/or proposition. Either you dive into the details and drama of the single-player story or you sacrifice some of the immersion for the sake of playing with a real adventuring party. The latest expansion, Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir, aims to bring those experiences closer together with a full party system, dynamic conversation options, and an entirely new overland travel system.

Earlier today, during a visit to Atari's booth at the 2008 Games Convention in Leipzig, we had an opportunity to meet with Obsidian Entertainment's Matt Rorie and take a look at Neverwinter Nights 2: The Storm of Zehir. Currently scheduled for release toward the end of this year, the second Neverwinter Nights 2 expansion will add a number of new classes and gameplay features to the popular role-playing game, many of which we got to see in action today.

During E3, at our meeting with Sega, we got to meet with one part of the Obsidian Entertainment team and watched them show off their latest game, Alpha Protocol. After our meeting with Sega, we then hustled over to Atari’s demonstration room where I got the opportunity to sit down with Obsidian’s Matthew Rorie as he showed off a very different game: Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir. Though you might not think much of the second expansion pack for the popular D&D RPG Neverwinter Nights 2, the upgrade fundamentally alters the Neverwinter Nights universe in a very profound way.

The true beauty of Neverwinter Nights 2 wasn't the well-done single-player campaign. It was the incredibly powerful Neverwinter toolset that allowed players with some time, patience and a modicum of artistic talent to create their own Dungeons & Dragons adventures. Since then Obsidian Entertainment, the game's developer, has been busy extending the abilities of the toolset when it wasn't busy showing what it could do in great expansions like Mask of the Betrayers. With Storm of Zehir, the team's latest expansion pack, Obsidian is gifting its loyal followers with a whole bunch of powerful new tools to play with wrapped up in an exciting new tropical adventure.

E3 2008 has already offered up plenty of RPG goodness for the PC gamer so it was just icing on the cake that Obsidian was on hand to show off the upcoming Neverwinter Nights 2 expansion, Storm of the Zehir. They recently walked us through a number of the game's new features during our visit to the Atari booth.

16.07.2008
We stopped by Atari's booth at E3 2008 to get a quick look at The Strom of Zehir, the much-anticipated expansion to Neverwinter Nights 2. The first major addition that fans of the NWN franchise will eat up is the new party-creation feature. Instead of starting your voyage with a cast of preset characters, you'll design your own friends, give them names, and even create your very own motto for your party.
