In conclusion, I'm forced to say that much of the expansion is not quite what we were promised. We could do with many more choices in the party formation, and a few different ways to manage the spirit bar wouldn't go amiss. The story is fantastic, if somewhat confusing until the whole thing gets wrapped up at the end. To be fair though, the main function of a game is to enjoy it, and have fun, both of which I did with Mask of the Betrayer. -

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer is a quality expansion pack. It includes numerous additions and improvements to the original Neverwinter Nights 2 engine, and while I didn’t hugely love the 20+ hour campaign that came with it, it’s not because no effort was put into it. The campaign is complicated and intriguing but also flawed and kind of dreary, and so while I can’t give it or the expansion pack as a whole a glowing recommendation, it seems easily worth its $30 suggested retail price. 8,2 von 10

If only it could have retained its sense of humour, this would be really good stuff. As it is, it's too po-faced too often, and still contains some of the bugs that bothered the original. However, with a tidied toolset and 25 more hours of story, it's still a solid and well-written expansion to an admirable game. 8,4 von 10

There is actually not much more that can be said about MotB. If you liked NWN2 and want to play more of the same you should go for it. If you liked NWN2 but want something new, more polished you should also give MotB a try. Heck, even if you didn’t like NWN2 but enjoyed the original NWN this expansion should strike home. 80/100

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer is a nice overall well built game expansion. They have added plenty of content to the original game and using the entirely new story created a unique and fun adventure. The game plays well but you should have at least a decent computer to play the game on medium settings. 8,0 von 10

This is a truly solid and enjoyable expansion. It can be very hard on the player, but part of the magic of the NWN series is that it requires you to think about what you are doing. Graphically the game does the job, the sound is well done, and the story is very strong. The original NWN2 had a few problems, something that has been addressed with this expansion. While the game has a few problems, it still is a reward for those who have played NWN2 and hungered for more. 8,3 von 10

It's a bit of a shame that some technical quirks, and a gameplay mechanic that I personally found extremely annoying, are present. Because Mask has all of the hallmarks of a new D&D classic: It presents epic high-level combat wrapped around a personable and intriguing story that ditches most of the traditional fantasy trappings. Even with significant flaws, it's still easily the best D&D game I've played since the power-duo of Baldur's Gate II and Planescape: Torment. 7 von 10

Mask of the Betrayer is a fine expansion pack from Obsidian. It's a more stable experience, seems to run slightly better, and more importantly delivers a narrative that, for the most part, proceeds along without getting tangled by the catches of cliche. Its characters and their interactions are sure to strike many satisfying chords within the hearts of the Dungeons & Dragons fans, though those uninitiated in the ways of these types of games should steer their attention toward the original before tackling this high-level affair. 8,5 von 10

So where does that leave us? A mass of excellent content - any add-on pack good enough to make you start the original has more than a certain something - with a few problems. It really isn't for anyone other than the devoted western-RPG head. Which is fine; the devoted western-RPG head has had a particularly weak year, and will lap this up. As they should. But if you're not in their ranks there's little here for you. 7/10

Despite its problems, Mask of the Betrayer is a good-but-not-great expansion pack that will certainly interest any D&D fan. The new modding tools are an excellent addition to any homebrew RPG designer's bag of tricks and the single-player campaign is worth playing simply for the terrific story. 3,5 von 5

Overall, this add-on is a job well done compared to some of Obsidian's earlier work. It's certainly an expansion pack worth playing, with a variety of features that actually improve the gameplay quite a bit. The addition of dark powers broadens the depth of the game and blends perfectly with the storyline. 86 von 100

Mask of the Betrayer is a much more mature expansion, both due to its content and because it demonstrates how Obsidian Entertainment is maturing as a developer. If you felt that NWN2 was a bit too action-focused, then you should definitely check out Mask of the Betrayer's blend of combat, puzzles, and decision-making. As it is, Mask of the Betrayer offers up a rich role-playing experience for fans of the genre. 8,0 von 10

Mask is not without problems, though. Even all these patches later, with two new "modes" to play in, NWN2's still got one of the most annoying, impossible-to-use cameras ever. 8,5 von 10

However, Mask of the Betrayer is without a doubt one of the most pleasant surprises of the year and further proof that Obsidian Entertainment can create quality RPGs if no one is standing with a shotgun at their backs to get the game done as soon as possible (yes, LucasArts, I’m looking at you). It’s also true however that if on the story, dialogues and character fronts MotB is an excellent example of how things should be done, on the technical and bug-fixing aspect, Obsidian still has some work to do. 88/100
