Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir is rapidly approaching completion. In your quest to save the Forgotten Realms from Zehir, the god of poison and snakes, you'll have several new gameplay upgrades at your disposal, including a party-creation system, three-dimensional overworld map, and a revamped crafting system. We checked in with lead designer Tony Evans from Obsidian Entertainment for the latest on Storm of Zehir, and he had plenty to say.

The Chultan Peninsula lies in the southwest portion of Faerun. Primarily tropical jungle, it's quite often regarded as uncivilized wilderness inhabited only by savages. As with many generalizations, this one is neither fully correct nor completely inaccurate. There's no question the region is largely untamed. It's also home to various tribes that are highly suspicious of outsiders, and thus invariably inhospitable to them, if not hostile. There are other dangers too, like populations of goblins, lizardfolk and feral dwarves as well as assorted predatory fauna and diseases. However, travelers can also visit four countries including Tashalar, where foreigners are welcome, especially those who come to trade. The other nations are Chult, Samarach and Thindol. All have substantial cities, although getting from one to another, even on the roads, is perilous enough that only the most foolish set out without concern.

One of the particularly enjoyable things I’ve been working on lately is providing feedback and direction on Storm of Zehir’s music, and implementing our music into the game. As I type this I am wiping joyful tears from my eyes – a side-effect of the eargasm I got from listening to the new Port Llast theme, composed by Kevin Chow of Rogue Dao, the team working on Purgatorio, a Planescape mod for NWN2. Much of the music we have gotten back from our composers is so good that I’ve added it to my MP3 playlist. As a personal note, I am pretty picky about the music that goes on my playlist. The Storm of Zehir music is keeping company with other great fantasy and game music, including:

Even though we suspected it for quite some time, it still came as a surprise when Atari and Obsidian Entertainment announced the development of another Neverwinter Nights 2 expansion pack. It was even more surprising to hear that Storm of Zehir "hearkens back to the days of the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale franchises" by introducing an overland map, a non-linear storyline, and a fully customizable party. Could this really be the best RPG-related news we've heard in months? Read on and decide for yourself:

While the toolset provided a wealth of opportunities for RPG fans to create their own adventures, the original game campaign was seen by many as lackluster.
